Housing Crisis Exacerbates in California Due to Destructive Wildfires and COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down the pace of construction and reduced the apartment construction by 12%, according to a new report (1) and now, the new waves of wildfires in California have started, destroying many structures including housing units. In 2018, in Sonoma County, CA, 6500 buildings were destroyed, including more than 5000 residential units (2). The amount of destruction this year is still unknown, but it is clear that the existing housing crisis in the state will exacerbate and the need for affordable housing will rise in the near future.
